UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on December 21 called on world leaders to attend a summit in September, 2010 to boost efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015. “Coming amid mixed progress toward the Goals and new crises that threaten the global effort to halve extreme poverty, the summit will be a crucially important opportunity to redouble our efforts to meet the Goals,” he said. “Just as now is the moment to act on climate change, the next half-decade must be the time to deliver on long-standing development promises to the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people – above all, those in Africa,” Mr. Ban stated. “In the decade since the Goals were first agreed, we have learned a great deal about what works, and where we need to focus our efforts. Evidence shows that the Goals can be achieved, even in the poorest countries, when good policies and projects are backed by adequate resources.”

Are you an Irish  producer of a DE resource? Would you like your  material included in an online depository of DE resources? If so, please contact KADE ASAP with details! Please email: coordinator (at) kade.ie.

KADE is the Irish partner in a EuropeAid funded project ‘Global Connections, Accessing Development Education’ (ADE), coordinated by Future Worlds Center (Cyprus) and in partnership with Youth Career and Advising Centre (Lithuania), ScotDec (Scotland), and Creating Effective Grassroots Alternatives Foundation (Bulgaria). The project’s main aim is to engage  educators and schools in Development Education activities and equip them with relevant training and materials, thus making them promoters and multipliers of national campaigns that aim to create awareness about development and about global interdependencies.

In this issue we introduces KADE's Dimensions of Development: This primary DE resource booklet compiled by KADE is a response to an identified need for readily applicable DE and intercultural teaching exercises and ideas. This booklet provides a selection of activities sourced from reputable DE bodies, as well as contact details about various organisations, websites, competitions, etc. Paper copies are enclosed in this newsletter mailshot for each Kerry primary school, and further copies can be downloaded from the new KADE website, which will be  launched shortly. Feedback on the booklet is welcome; please email KADE with your comments and suggestions.
