Romania is one of the poorest countries in Central and Eastern Europe.The legacy of the Ceausescu years has left the country with a largely obsolete industrial base and a pattern of output unsuited to the country’s needs.
Governments have struggled with the task of restructuring the economy since the establishment of democratic rule in 1990 - 45% of the population lives below the poverty line and living standards continue to fall.Much remains to be achieved before Romania can achieve its hope of joining the EU.
