Introduction to Secondary
CSPE, LCA & TY
KADE works with secondary school students at Civic, Social and Political Education (CSPE), Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) and Transition Year (TY) levels.
CSPE & LCA
At this level, KADE explores a range of global issues within the framework of the UN Millennium Development Goals. KADE works with CSPE students to explore relationships between Fair Trade and the MDGs or Conflict and Peace and the MDGs. For LCA students the most popular topic in the last few years has been the Human Rights and the MDGs.
In 2007, KADE started work on developing a Transition Year unit based on the Millennium Development Goals with the aid of the National Council for Curriculum& Assessment (NCCA). The unit, entitled ‘Developing Local and Global Links’ introduces Development Education in general to Transition Year students through a thorough exploration of the Millennium Development Goals. It takes students on a personal journey of discovering how much they know about themselves and what happens around their localities to opening their eyes to wider global issues affecting other children their age in the wider world. Prior to validation by NCCA, the module has to be piloted by several schools. In 2008, KADE worked with Mercy Mounthawk, in Tralee and Colaiste na Sceilge in Caherciveen.
At Mercy Mounthawk, as a result of the work on the TY unit, the 2008 TY class developed a booklet on the UN MDGs, for CSPE students. The booklet is an attempt by the TY class to share knowledge that they gained about global issues during the year, with junior classes at the school.
