Kerry Mayor Tom Fleming was presented a copy of with the KADE Millennium Development Goals information poster Monday, Oct 13, 2008 in Council Chambers in Tralee by KADE Chairman Sean Lyons and KADE Education Officer Ciara O’Connor. The poster forms part of KADE’s Co. Kerry awareness campaign about the UN Goals. They will be circulated to every school in Kerry, as well as community development organisations, churches, businesses and posted on the KADE website. The Goals, which relate to basic development essentials such as education and health, were set by the UN in 2000 with an intended achievement date in 2015.
KADE Chairman Sean Lyons emphasised:
· Millennium Development Goals are the most important document of the past 100 years
· The work of KADE is linked to the MDG’s
· The posters represent an important and significant step in KADE’s work
· KADE Education Officer Ciara O’Connor had the imagination and commitment to bring this project from a bright idea to a reality
· Schools, community centres and businesses throughout Kerry will have this poster for display as a constant reminder of the solemn promises made.
· We as Irish people are rightly proud of Bono and Geldof and Mags O’Riordan for the magnificent work they do but they could not do it without the goodwill and positive action of the communities in Ireland.
· We should not forget, even in times of economic turmoil, those who survive on $1 a day. In the times of the shortcomings of our own health service we must not forget those who suffer and die in their thousands for want of basic medical care and clean water. In times of constant media criticism of our young people, we should not forget that throughout Kerry, students are becoming more aware of the need for justice and equality.
· In times of short memories, we cannot forget the MDG’s.
Mayor Fleming, praised the efforts of KADE in raising awareness about the UN goals. “I would like to congratulate KADE on the work they do to try and create an understanding of development issues relating to world poverty. “We have a responsibility to ensure that people in Ireland, both young and old, to understand the effects of poverty in developing countries and the efforts being made to eradicate it.”
