Report by Aoife Collins and Mary McGillicuddy.

This report looks at the relevance of refugee and asylum seeker issues for local authorities in County Kerry.

The research was conducted with four overall objectives in mind:

(1) to assess the views of statutory and non-statutory agencies on the importance of refugee/asylum issues;

(2) to explore ways in which local government in Kerry can become more informed about issues pertaining to refugee and asylum seekers in the community, and particularly in relation to the ‘global’ dimension to refugee and asylum issues;

(3) to inform local government on the possible development of agreed local strategies, which would work to develop the skills that assist in combating discrimination, social exclusion and poverty, as experienced by refugees and asylum seekers in Kerry;

(4) Finally, to explore the role that Development Education could play in promoting a greater awareness, understanding and motivation towards action on refugee/ asylum seeker issues within local government in Kerry.
